Participatory action research (PAR) is a methodology that involves the active participation of participants in all stages of the research process. PAR aims to empower individuals and communities by involving them as co-researchers, enabling them to identify problems, develop solutions and make decisions about actions that can improve their lives.
The origins of PAR can be traced back to the work of Brazilian educator Paulo Freire, who developed a form of education called “critical pedagogy” based on empowering learners through dialogue. In this method, learners are encouraged to question their assumptions and explore new perspectives on issues affecting their lives.
In PAR, researchers collaborate with community members to understand social issues from multiple perspectives. This collaborative approach generates knowledge that is grounded in local contexts. As such, it is more likely to lead to interventions that are relevant and effective for those involved.
The process starts with identifying an issue or problem within a community. From there, researchers work collaboratively with community members to design research questions and methods. Participants then collect data together through interviews, surveys or other means as decided upon collectively.
Analysis occurs throughout the project lifecycle allowing for adjustments in direction if necessary. The results are shared back with participants who make decisions about how best to use the information gathered – often resulting in real-world solutions being created & implemented which reflect everyone’s input equally.
PAR has been used extensively within alternative schools where students become co-researchers alongside teachers leading projects about issues they feel passionately about like sustainability or mental health awareness campaigns amongst youth populations.
Overall Participatory action research offers an empowering solution for communities looking for sustainable change tailored towards specific needs not just prescribed by outside organizations or experts alone.
