Tom Hanks is an actor known around the world for his talent, versatility and unmistakable charm. His incredible career has spanned over four decades in Hollywood, during which he has become one of the most beloved and respected actors of our time. But what many people may not know about Tom Hanks is that he was also homeschooled for a portion of his education.
Hanks was born on July 9, 1956, in Concord, California. He grew up in a family of five children with parents who were both involved in theater. From a young age, Hanks showed an interest in acting and would often participate in school plays.
When Hanks was only five years old, his parents separated. This led to him moving around frequently with his father until eventually settling down again with his mother and siblings in Oakland. It was during this time that Hanks began attending Skyline High School.
However, after two years at Skyline High School, Tom’s family once again moved – this time to Red Bluff – where there were no high schools nearby that could offer him the education that he wanted or needed. As a result of this move and lack of options available to them near their new home location; Tom’s mother decided to homeschool him instead.
At first glance it might seem like being homeschooled would be disadvantageous for someone who aspired to be an actor since traditional schooling provides opportunities such as drama clubs or extracurricular activities related to performing arts; but it didn’t stop Tom from pursuing his passion for acting outside the classroom walls whenever possible.
During interviews later on regarding his childhood experiences growing up homeschooled; Hank described how important reading books became while studying at home “It wasn’t easy because my mom wasn’t necessarily trained as a teacher herself,” said Hank “But she had been given access to materials from various curriculums & we read everything under the sun… I was a voracious reader, and that helped me become a better writer in the long run.”
Hanks went on to attend Chabot College in Hayward, California after completing his homeschooled education. He later transferred to California State University, Sacramento where he majored in theater arts.
In 1979, after years of working odd jobs and performing in local theater productions; Tom Hanks got his first break as an actor with a starring role in the low-budget horror film “He Knows You’re Alone.” However it wasn’t until 1984 when he landed the lead role in “Splash” opposite Daryl Hannah that he rose to national prominence.
Throughout his career, Hanks has starred in some of Hollywood’s most iconic films including “Forrest Gump,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “Cast Away,” and “Apollo 13.” He has been nominated for numerous awards for his acting skills from Academy Awards to Golden Globes & BAFTAs among others; winning many as well.
But aside from being an accomplished actor; Tom is also known for being a philanthropist who supports various causes such as AIDS/HIV research & advocacy efforts or environmental protection groups like The Nature Conservancy. Additionally he is noted often for giving back generously through donations made towards educational institutions such as Harvey Mudd College or National World War II Museum among others.
Tom Hanks’ success story is proof that alternative schooling can be just as effective – if not more so – than traditional schooling methods. His homeschooling experience taught him how to be self-motivated and independent while also allowing him the flexibility to pursue his passion outside of school hours. It’s no wonder then why he is one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors today.
