To begin leatherworking, one must first acquire the necessary tools and materials. Basic tools include a cutting mat, rotary cutter or knife, stitching groover, awl, needles, thread (waxed polyester is recommended), edge beveler, skiving knife or machine (optional), rivet setter and snaps. Materials required will depend on the project being undertaken but typically include leather hide(s), dye(s) if desired for coloration of leather pieces along with glue.
