Montessori Method: A Panel Discussion
As the world progresses, many alternative forms of schooling and education are gaining immense popularity. Montessori method is one such form that has been around for over a century now, but it still remains largely misunderstood and underappreciated.
So, in this panel discussion style post, we have invited some experts to shed light on what Montessori method really is and how it differs from traditional methods of teaching.

Moderator: Thank you all for joining us today! Let’s start with Dr. Maria Montessori herself. Can you tell us a little about the philosophy behind your method?
Dr. Maria Montessori: Of course! My method is based on the belief that each child is born naturally curious and eager to learn about their environment through exploration and discovery at their own pace. Our job as educators is not to teach them but rather to provide them with an environment that encourages independent learning.
Moderator: That sounds fascinating! Sarah, as a parent who has chosen Montessori education for her child, can you share your experience?
Sarah Jackson: Absolutely! I was initially drawn to this approach because it focuses on cultivating creativity, independence, critical thinking skills in my child while also fostering his social development by allowing him to work alongside children of different ages.
Moderator: Interesting point there Sarah! But John here comes our traditional teacher with quite some experience in education; What do you think makes traditional schools’ methods more effective?
John Smith: Well first off let me say that I have nothing against alternative forms of education but I do think that traditional schools offer structure which provides students with discipline they need later in life when entering college or their careers. In traditional schools, there is a clear curriculum and teachers guide students through it step by step.
Moderator: Thank you for sharing your thoughts John. Now Dr. Montessori, can you explain how this method encourages independent learning?
Dr. Maria Montessori: Sure! Our classrooms are designed to be child-centered with materials that facilitate active learning and hands-on experiences. Children are encouraged to choose activities they find interesting or challenging, work at their own pace, and explore new concepts on their own.
Moderator: That sounds like an ideal environment for children’s growth! Sarah, have you seen these benefits in your child?
Sarah Jackson: Absolutely! My son has become more self-motivated and confident in his abilities since starting at a Montessori school. He also loves the freedom of choosing what he wants to learn and when he wants to learn it.
Moderator: Great point there Sarah! John, do you think the traditional classroom could benefit from incorporating some aspects of the Montessori approach?
John Smith: Yes I do think so. While structure is important in traditional schools, we could definitely give students more freedom within that structure to pursue topics that interest them or offer opportunities for hands-on learning.
